What's happening at BTR *10* .. & report issues here
#1
With that last recommendation for me to start mining reminded me that the last thread was getting too long.
:D

http://www.babeltechreviews.com/communit...p?tid=1043

I finally caught up.  The last few weeks have been extra busy with some back-to-back reviews happening with little pause.
Cool

The VertDesk v3 *is* nice ... but it will never hold a mining PC.  I am probably not going to get Forza 3 either as I have 2 racing games as benchmarks.  And I am benching 6700K now in preparation for getting a MB for my 8700K.  I'll wait until Monday to order.

Then who knows? 1070 Ti perhaps, aftermarket Vega 56 likely, 6700kv8700k at the same clocks certainly, and overclocking 8700K on EVGA's MB is a must.
- Oh yeah, Destiny 2 is coming out Tuesday and if I had to guess, I probably *won't* review it although I will positively add it to BTR's benching suite.

Oh right...I was forgetting about Destiny 2, thanks. I will definitely be playing it once I get it on Tuesday.

Have fun! You have some interesting new hardware coming in.

I am just tired. 7 reviews in 6 weeks isn't that outstanding, but 4 reviews in the last 10 days is a tough schedule - considering that 2 of them were game reviews - and I spent 60 hours just playing them.

I am not really looking forward to Destiny 2. I just want to get back to reviewing PC hardware. It's been awhile.

And I am going to upgrade my satellite plan to "unlimited" pretty soon. $100 a month for at least 25mbps.
- I just have to find out how data is prioritized once the 160GB of primary data is used up.

Here's a dishonest review of Shadow of War that really emphasizes the reviewer's fantasies about the negative parts of the game. It is a total lie that micro-transactions are intrusive or that they are necessary at all to enjoying the game. The grind is no more difficult than the first game which had no micro transactions. The online stuff adds a little bit to the game and if Whales want to spend real money on better gear and level faster, who cares? These games are unbelievably expensive to produce and maintain and only a few really print money for the publushers IMO

The things you learn from Reddit ... someone posted that after 20 years he switched from ATi/AMD to Nvidia graphics and he got these first 2 comments:

I think Jensen deliberately chose "nvidia" as the name back in the day as well as the green color. :D

Sure Jensen may have a slightly inflated ego, but given what he has accomplished over the years I think he's rightfully entitled to it.

as for "old red friends going green with NV", they sure do - then they "vomit" in forums....

It's really funny but probably true. That's why I posted the Reddit comments here.

Nvidia has accomplished a great deal. I wish I had bought their stock a year ago. It's almost $200 now
- and probably a bargain at that

I am probably going to buy this ASRock MB tomorrow:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a...6813157790&cm

It's $130 after a $10 MiR and is supports M2 which is Optane tech.

I am also guessing that I should just forget about SSD for a long time and use two of these (I am assuming that I will need to keep one paired with the AMD HDD and the other with the Nvidia HDD). 2x$80=$160. What do you think?

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a...6820167427

Now if I upgrade to Optane, then I need larger capacity HDDs. 2TB won't do for all my games plus VR games. Which of these 3TB HDDs look good to you?

HGST is $80 w/ 5-year warranty
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a...5AD2AE0872&cm

I think it is the same repackaging of this refurbished Hitachi for $50 and it has a 1-year warranty
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a...5AD5YT9272&cm

Or this Toshiba on sale for $75? Only a 2-year warranty
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a...6822149633&ignorebbr=1

They are all 3TB 7200 rpm HDDs. How reliable is HGST? ... a 5-year warranty is attractive

Here's the one that I really want
https://www.amazon.com/Intel-Optane-P480...B071VRNXVM

Quote: $1751.03 & Free Shipping
Intel SSD DC P4800X PCIe
375GB SSD
SSD Type : TLC
PCI-Express-v3-x4 - HHHL
IOPS : 550K
I'd still need two of them ... but I wouldn't need to upgrade my storage for a long time.

Those all look like good purchases to me. HGST drives are very good. It's a tough call new versus the refurb. The 5 year warranty on the new unit sounds worth it to me. However I have heard good things about the HGST refurbs through Newegg, so it might be worth the gamble.

HGST is the way to go imo.

Thank-you.

Now I have to do a little reading on Optane tech. I think I will need two (one for each HDD) because of the caching involved; but perhaps one will do.
